The origin of quantum mechanics
Quantum mechanics stemmed from wave-particle duality of light. In 1927,Heisenberg introduced uncertainty principle,which describes the complementary characteristics of position and momentum of particle:
where ħ is the reduced Planck constant. The formula implies if particle's position has been detected accurately,particle's momentum would haven't been detected accurately,and vice versa.
Schrödinger equation
Quantum state and wave function plays important role in quantum mechanics. In 1926,Schrödinger derived one well-known equation:(general form)
where Ĥ on the left side is Hamiltonian operator, and Ψ is the wave function,undoubtedly.
Schrödinger equation describes the evolution over time of quantum system.

Summary,quantum mechanics describes the microscopic world just as particles. Therefore,general relativity and quantum mechanics have been regarded as extreme different theory for a long time.

In quantum world,everything is dominated by possibility and random.
There is a famous experiment in quantum mechanics, Schrödinger's cat,namely. Before we observe the cat in the box,it was to be in simultaneous alive and dead,called superposition. After that, it will either alive or dead when we observe.
Based on the experiment, physicists think that the world may divide into two worlds when we open the box and see only one position,this is "many-worlds interpretation ". As a consequence, quantum mechanics means the other universe are exist. We can consider it as multiverse,or parallel universe in scientific works.
